Professional Bio
Dr. Christopher Chin received his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) from Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health.

Attending A.T. Still University’s School of Health Management, he received his Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) with Dental Emphasis to enhance his ability to serve underserved communities. Prior to returning to Arizona, Dr. Chin was a principal dentist at a Federally Qualified Health Center in rural Southeast Missouri. There he served those who were the most vulnerable including seniors, patients with special needs and children.

Dr. Chin serves as adjunct faculty with Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. The focus on teaching underscores his commitment to continued education and refinement of his skills and knowledge. To this end, he is also a member of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and the American Dental Association (ADA) where the culture of life-long learning is fostered.

Throughout his career he has been involved in numerous community outreach projects. This includes the ADA sponsored Give Kids a Smile and the nationally recognized UCSD Pre-Dental Society free dental clinics. He finds joy in giving back to the communities wherever possible.

Dr. Chin is from San Diego, California where his father is a practicing dentist and his mother is a nurse. Growing up in a medical family he was instilled with the values and responsibilities of the dental profession from a young age. He is married to a pediatric dentist who shares his love for dentistry. They have a dog named Bullet and enjoy many outdoor activities like biking, running and hiking. During the winter he and his wife enjoy visiting colder portions of the world to ski and snowboard.

Dentures and Mouth Infections

Dentures and Mouth Infections

Regular adjustments and/or replacement of your dentures is not only important for your own comfort (and to prevent mouth sores and bone loss), ill-fitting dentures can also result in mouth infections.  Two types of infections that have the possibility of developing are cheilitis and stomatitis.

Cheilitis. This is a painful infection that causes inflammation and cracking at the corners of your mouth. It is caused by an overgrowth of yeast. Yeast can accumulate in moist areas of your mouth if your dentures don't fit properly.

Stomatitis. This is another infection that is caused by too much yeast. You may not know you have denture-induced stomatitis, because symptoms are not always obvious. When symptoms are noticeable, you may see small red bumps on the roof of your mouth or general mouth redness, especially under your upper dentures.

Both cheilitis and stomatitis can be treated with medicine and proper denture care.  If your dentures are not fitting properly or you are experiencing the above signs/symptoms, contact Green Valley, AZ Dentist, Dr. Dawnie Kildoo at (520) 625-0131 as soon as possible to schedule an evaluation.

Laser Therapy in the Treatment of Gum Disease by Green Valley Dentist, Dr. Dawnie L. Kildoo

Legacy Smiles of Southern Arizona/Dr. Dawnie Kildoo offers Laser Therapy.  Laser therapy is a conservative non-surgical treatment for your periodontal disease. With proper homecare and your participation, this procedure can often alleviate the problem.

Before using the laser we will go through the process of scaling and root planing. The laser is used after the tartar and calculus is removed and will remove diseased or infected tissues lining the pockets around your teeth. At the same time the laser will kill the bacteria that cause your gum disease and will help promote healthy healing of the gums around your teeth. Lasers are used because of the precise control they afford the dentist and the comfort they provide to patients.  For more information on Laser Therapy, contact our office at (520) 625-0131 or talk with Dr. Kildoo or your Dental Hygienist at your next visit to find out if you are a candidate for this treatment.

Gum Disease = Bone Loss

Periodontal disease is not the only cause of tooth loss, but it's the primary reason people over age 35 lose their teeth. Less common sources of tooth loss include osteoporosis and injury to the face.

Osteoporosis is a culprit because a reduction in bone density can lead to deterioration of the bone that supports the teeth.

What is a Dental Filling?

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When you are treated with a dental filling, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed, the tooth is cleaned/prepared and then filled with a filling material.  By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay.

Dr. Kildoo uses a composite resin filling material (tooth-colored filling).  Composite resins are matched to be the same color as your teeth and therefore used where a natural appearance is desired. The ingredients are mixed and placed directly into the prepared area, where they harden and replace the decayed tooth structure.

If you are planning on whitening your teeth in the near future, be sure to let Dr. Kildoo know.  Fillings do not whiten as natural tooth structure does so you should choose a lighter tooth shade in anticipation of whitening your teeth (Or simply whiten first!).

Please feel free to contact our office at (520) 625-0131 re: dental fillings or with any other questions you may have.

Wisdom Teeth: Why do we have them?

Ancient man had larger jaws and more teeth in order to grind foliage and raw food. Evolution of diet lead to smaller jaws but, the wisdom teeth weren't lost in the process. This is the reason why problems involving the wisdom teeth are so common in the population, because there simply isn't sufficient space for them to grow.
